Everything, he believed, was numerical – there was nothing that could not be explained by number. As this trite summary of his, doctrine may give an impression of undue simplicity, it is well to add that the views of Pythagoras were, in fact, extremely complicated. He travelled far and wide, to Egypt and India, learning and preaching, and wherever he went the gospel he preached was Number. Looking back over the span of time to this period five centuries before the coming of Christ, it is thrilling to speculate upon the impact which Pythagoras must have had upon his contemporaries. He was born about the year 569 B.C., and died in 500 B.C. Other chronicles establish that he was recognised as an outstanding personality by his contemporaries, but his views were considered much too advanced! He learnt the need of secrecy, knew what it meant to be both revered and reviled. To gain an understanding of the mystery, we must remember he was a revolutionary. Curious that Pythagoras, who had such a high regard for numbers, should have left posterity confused about his own birth-date and movements. His dis¬coveries signify one of those great, regal developments by which, every now and then, evolution takes an awe-inspiring bound forward to the light. Though he evidently did not invent numbers, he was certainly the father of number analysis. His majestic figure strides across two thousand years. None who essay the study of numbers will proceed very far without encountering Pythagoras.
